 Traveling Tea is 100% locally owned and operated by Kateri Meyer, who acquires teas from sustainably managed and fair trade farms. Thanksgiving Heritage Turkeys
Twelve year-old farmer, Will King of Stone County, MO has pasture-raised Royal Palm turkeys available for your Thanksgiving dinner. A heritage breed featured in Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste, the Royal Palm is a smaller - though very tasty - variety. St. Louis City - County Merger Debate on 10/19

St. Louis Great Debates Series

One of the perennial topics that comes up for discussion is the possible merger of St. Louis City with St. Louis County.  For its first panel discussion, the new St. Louis Great Debates Series will tackle the question:  “Should the City of St. Louis re-enter St. Louis County?” Panelists will be Terry Jones, professor of Political Science at University of Missouri-St. Louis; Gene McNary, former four-term St.
Louis County Executive; and Ambassador George Herbert “Bert” Walker III, former chair of the St. Louis “Home Rule” project.  

The debate will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom of the Washington University School of Law.   Seating is limited  and they are no longer accepting reservations, but walk ins are welcome.  For more information visit www.stlurbancorps.org .

August 3rd is National Night Out, Election Day and More Announcements!

Reminder that Tuesday, August 3rd is National Night Out, as well as Election Day!  2010 marks the 27th year National Night Out Against Crime events will take place across the country and across our neighborhoods.  National Night Out strengthens relationships and overall neighborhood spirit.  It increases awareness about crime and drug prevention.  Most importantly, when you and your neighbors come out for events on this night, it sends a message to criminals that you are organized and that you are fighting back against crime.

 

Being a citizen has certain rights and responsibilities, a big one being the right and responsibility to vote . The Primary Election on August 3 will serve the purpose of nominating candidates for U.S. Senator, State Auditor, U.S. Representative in Districts 1 and 3, State Senator in District 4, State Representative in Districts 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67 and 108, Collector of Revenue, License Collector, Recorder of Deeds, and Clerk of the Circuit Court, and voting on Propositions C and S.  Your vote is crucial to our democracy.  For more details, visit http://www.stlelections.com/ .

Tax-Free Weekend in Missouri

 

Break out the back-to-school shopping list and hit the stores this weekend for Tax-Free Weekend in Missouri.  Starting at midnight on Friday, Aug. 6 and going until midnight Sunday, Aug. 8 back-to-school purchases such as clothing, school supplies, computers and similar items will be exempt from state sales tax.  Note, some local jurisdictions have opted out, but the state exemption still applies – even if the purchase is not for school.

On the first Friday night of the month, Union Station presents its Twilight Under the Train Shed Free Movies Series.  This Friday, Aug. 6 enjoy “Back to the  Future” at the Lake Stage, starting at 8:30 p.m.  

 

For Your Health

 

Several organizations are offering health screenings this weekend for your convenience.

 

Children six months to six years old are invited to be screened for the leading causes of childhood blindness.  Stop by the St. Louis Science Center, 5050 Oakland, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday to take advantage of this free offer.

 

School physicals and school supplies will be available at Grace Hill Water Tower Health Center, 4414 N. Florissant from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.  Bring your child’s immunizations record.  Sliding fees will be applied for those without health insurance.

 

The 4th Annual AKA Community Health Far will be this Saturday, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Monsanto Y, 5555 Page Blvd.  Activities include free screenings, health education, healthy food and exercise demonstrations, children’s activities, senior citizen resources, chair massages, a bike raffle and more.

 

Serbfest 2010

 

The annual two-day Serbfest will be this weekend, Saturday, Aug. 7 and Sunday, Aug. 8 at Holy Trinity Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 1910 Serbian Drive in the historic McKinley Heights neighborhood.  Enjoy authentic Serbian food and desserts, Serbian cultural booths, church tours, Serbian Folklore Dancing and more from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Compton Heights Concert Band will begin performing at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9 in Tower Grove Park, South Grand and Magnolia, as part of the Musical Mondays Series.

 

There will be a free Summer Children’s Concert at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug 11 at Tower Grove Park, 4255 Magnolia.

 

The Bosman Twins will perform at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11 at O’Fallon Park, I-70 and West Florissant, as part of the O’Fallon Park Jazz Concert Series.

The dog days of August will soon be upon us, but a number of exciting  neighborhood events are scheduled for the last days of July in St.Louis.  Be sure to stay hydrated, check on your neighbors and relatives to make sure they’re OK, take care with your pets and remember that a cooling center is just a phone call away at 2-1-1.  Heat-related illness is not to be taken lightly.

Breakfast for Bikers

For those of you who bike to work to or from Downtown, on the last Wednesday of every month, in this case Wednesday, July 28, Trailnet and the Downtown Partnership for St. Louis sponsor coffee and bagels for cyclists from 6:30 - 9:30 a.m. at Old Post Office Plaza, 9th and Locust.  Stop by on your way to work and meet fellow cyclists while enjoying breakfast.

Pet Adoption Fair

Looking to add a four-legged furry friend to your family?  The City of St. Louis will be holding a Pet Adoption Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 28 at City Court Plaza, 1520 Market Street. Come Downtown and see if the perfect pet is waiting for you at the fair.
